New Delhi, June 03: India has installed the country’s first and the largest liquid-mirror telescope in Asia atop a 2450-metre high mountain in Nainital district of Uttarakhand. It can monitor falling debris from space and transient objects like asteroids.

  liquid mirror telescope

This telescope has been prepared by astronomers from India, Belgium and Canada. The International Liquid-Mirror Telescope (ILMT) will also help in observing the supernova. Also, many galaxies can be seen only by staring at the strip of sky passing above.

Equipment kept in Devasthal observatory premises
The new instrument is housed at the Devasthal observatory complex of Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES). It has a 4 meter diameter rotating mirror made of a thin film of liquid mercury to collect and focus the light. Another thin transparent film of Mylar protects the mercury from the wind.

what did the scientist say
ILMT project scientist Dr. Brajesh Kumar said the telescope is expected to start regular science operations later this year. The data will help identify variable and transient stellar sources passing through our skies. Big Data and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning algorithms will be applied to classify the objects observed by ILMT.
