The ‘Darjeeling Orange’ of West Bengal is famous across the country for its taste and aroma. Earlier in this season it used to have a business of crores of rupees. But, since last two years the situation has completely changed. Production has come down to 30%. The businessmen who used to get 20 big trucks loaded in a day are now able to manage only 3-4 small vehicles. According to the people associated with this work, the reason for the decrease in production is global warming. There are also allegations that they are facing complete indifference from the government.

Production of ‘Darjeeling oranges’ down to 30%
The orange traders of West Bengal and the people engaged in its production are facing huge losses. The reason for this is that there has been a drastic reduction in the production of this seasonal fruit and it has come down to 30%. Its effect is clearly visible in the biggest wholesale market of Siliguri. The local ‘Darjeeling orange’ of Bengal is famous for its special taste and aroma. It has been doing business worth crores of rupees only between November and January. However, there has been a surprising decrease in its production over the years.

Allegations of not getting help from the government
Traders from all over the country have been reaching Siliguri, the biggest wholesale market here, to buy ‘Darjeeling oranges’. But, since last two years the situation is very bad. Orange production has come down drastically in Darjeeling, Kerseong and Kalimpong. According to traders in Siliguri, it has come down to 30 per cent. Orange traders claim that the production of oranges has declined due to lack of help from the government.

‘Orange market is almost over now’
Binod Rastogi, an orange trader in the Siliguri market, said, “The orange market is almost over now.” According to him, ‘Initially, oranges were produced in large quantities in November and December. But, now it has come down to 30 per cent during this period.

Global warming is being told the reason
The reason given by him indicates the seriousness of the situation. He said, ‘This is happening due to global warming and lack of proper care of the trees. If it continues like this, then this fruit will disappear. He says, ‘The government should intervene immediately and control the crisis. Lakhs of people are directly or indirectly involved in this business and the livelihood of many is in danger.

We are helpless – orange growers
Another trader named Pradir Prasad said, “We used to do a lot of fruit business, used to get at least 20 truckloads, but now it has come down to 3 to 4 small vehicles.” Chitra Chhetri, a local orange grower said, “We are not getting any help from the government. We are trying to manage the orange trees in our garden, but we are helpless due to non-availability of organic manure. (Input-ANI)
