In a resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi, Hardik Patel hit out at Rahul Gandhi, saying “top leaders” were distracted by his mobile phone and Gujarat Congress leaders were more interested in arranging chicken sandwiches for him. Though Hardik Patel has been officially denying that he is joining the BJP, his admiration for the BJP and its leadership in a recent interview told a different story. He also said that he wasted three years in Congress! He said Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, BJP sources were quoted as saying that Hardik Patel would soon join the party.

Hardik Patel is an Indian politician and social activist. Patel came to prominence in July 2015, where he led the Patidar reservation movement. Demanded Other Backward Class (OBC) status for the Patidar caste at the age of just 20. Hardik Patel led the Patidar movement in 2015, due to which his sister failed to get a state government scholarship, though her friend who belonged to the OBC, got the scholarship despite securing a lower rank. This exposed the discrimination faced by the Patidars of the community. Since 2020, Patel has served as the working president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, the state unit of the Indian National Congress in Gujarat.

Hardik Patel, who believed in Lord Ram and followed the ideals of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was born on 20 July 1993 in a Gujarati Patidar family to Bharat and Usha Patel. In 2004, his parents moved to Viramgam. Hardik studied in classes VI to VIII at Divya Jyot School in Viramgam, before moving to KB Shah Vinay Mandir, where he studied till class XII. He was a poor student and cricket lover. After completing class XII, Hardik started helping his father Bharat run a small business of installing submersible pumps in underground water wells. Bharat was a Congress worker. Hardik Patel’s rally in Ahmedabad in 2015 was a historic one. When Hardik stood up at such a young age, millions of people listened. He was sued for breaking many laws but by then Hardik Patel had dominated the political scene.

In 2010, Hardik Patel took admission in Sahajanand College, Ahmedabad. He was elected unopposed as the General Secretary of the College Students Union. In 2013, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree. On 18 October 2015, Patel was booked for insulting the national flag of India in a case registered in Rajkot. He was briefly detained for trying to disrupt a One Day International (ODI) cricket match between India and South Africa. Many cases were registered against him but he was being discussed everywhere.

On 19 October 2015, Patel was booked in Surat on sedition charges over his alleged remarks about ‘police killing’. Thereafter, he was imprisoned. On 15 July 2016, Patel was granted bail on the condition that he would be out of the state for six months and out of Mehsana for nine months. For this period he moved to Udaipur. On 25 July 2018, Patel was found guilty of rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly. All three were fined Rs one lakh. 50,000 fine was imposed in addition to two years’ imprisonment.

Hardik Patel appealed against this order and could not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as the decision on his appeal was pending. On 12 April 2022, the Supreme Court stayed his conviction order until his appeal against the conviction was decided. The adjournment was made to allow him to contest the elections. On May 9, 2022, the City Sessions Court allowed the withdrawal of the riot case against Hardik Patel.
