Justice UU Lalit retired after completing a tenure of 74 days
The 74-day term of the country’s 49th Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit ended on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India on August 27, 2022. Justice Lalit, born on November 9, 1957, was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. He has been the second CJI in the country who was appointed directly from the bar as a judge of the Supreme Court. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65. Now Justice UU Lalit will get the pension, allowance and other facilities given to the former CJI.
Ex-CJI will get these special facilities
With the retirement of the country’s 48th Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, the Union Law Ministry had increased the post-retirement benefits to the Supreme Court judges. Obviously Justice UU Lalit would also be entitled to it. After retirement, Justice Lalit will be given domestic help as well as a chauffeur (driver) for the rest of his life. Apart from this, they will also be provided with a lifelong secretariat assistant. After the amendments made on August 26, 2022, a provision has been made to provide 24-hour security cover to the former Chief Justice for the next five years. In the case of other Supreme Court judges, this security cover will be for three years.
Free Type-VII Accommodation in Delhi
Former CJI UU Lalit will now also be provided Type-VII accommodation in New Delhi for the next 6 months as a retirement benefit, for which no rent will be charged from him. Apart from the former Chief Justice, all retired judges of the Supreme Court will also be provided with ceremonial lounge at the airport with full protocol. They will be provided free telephone at their residence and will also be reimbursed for residential telephone and mobile calls.
Rs.16,80,000 Annual Pension+DA
Apart from all this, the former Chief Justice of India will get a pension of Rs 16,80,000 annually. On top of that DA (Dearness Relief) will also be paid. Along with this, the former CJI will also get a lump sum gratuity of Rs 20,00,000 on retirement. But, there is also a provision that if the judge takes any other post after retirement, he will not be able to get many of the post-retirement benefits. The total fixed strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 34. Of these, three to four judges retire every year.

What did you do on the last day in the Supreme Court?
Justice UU Lalit was in a different style on the last day of his short tenure of 74 days as Chief Justice of India. After reaching the Supreme Court, he bowed his head first in front of its stairs and then proceeded towards his office. He was accompanied by his wife Amita Lalit. He also met his staff on the Supreme Court campus and expressed his gratitude for the cooperation they received during his tenure in the Supreme Court.
