Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha has once again proved himself. Known for modernizing politics and making it more accountable, young Punjab MP Raghav Chadha has 100 per cent attendance in the winter session. After this he has issued a ‘report card’ to the public. A seven-page report card showing his legislative performance. Also lists the questions raised, issues debated and notices submitted under Rule 267 on matters relating to Punjab and India.

During the winter session of the Rajya Sabha from December 7 to December 23, he asked a total of 25 questions on a wide range of issues, most of which were related to Punjab. These included waiver of fees for the pilgrims of Shri Kartarpur Sahib, severe punishment for sacrilege, heritage city status to Anandpur Sahib, modernization of railway stations, promotion of leather manufacturing industry in Jalandhar, UDAN scheme, police modernization, PMGSY, SAI centers Growth etc. questions were included.

Apart from this, while supporting the interests of farmers, he questioned the government on promoting alternatives to stubble burning, difference between market price and MSP, ground water level in Punjab, shortage of DAP, doubling of farmers’ income and other agricultural issues. He also sat on a dharna in front of the Gandhi statue demanding strictest punishment for sacrilege.

Raghav Chadha, delivering his first speech in this session, proposed to hold the discussion on the supplementary demands for grants and the budget twice, which made headlines for its well-researched and witty style. His 10 big questions to the Finance Minister went viral on social media. The 10 big questions he asked were based on weak rupee, government’s inability to provide jobs, tax burden, start-up ‘slowdown’, falling exports and private sector’s reluctance to invest. He also asked the Finance Minister whether he knew the cost of a kilo of wheat and rice along with other essential commodities.

MP Chadha raised issues including rising inflation, steel prices, smuggling of fake currency across the border, pension to ex-servicemen, growth rate of manufacturing sector, import of essential food items, internet shutdown, vacancies and pending cases in quasi-judicial bodies. Asked questions on many other issues as well.

He favored the independence of the judiciary, strongly objecting to the Bill on a private member National Judicial Appointments Commission to control the appointment of judges.

Apart from this, he also participated in major debates. Talked on return of gangsters operating from abroad, AIIMS data hacking, provocative news debates etc. and introduced several ‘points of order’ to regulate Rajya Sabha proceedings.

Issuing several notices under Rule 267 (suspension of business) of the Rajya Sabha, he asked the House to raise issues of public importance, including rising COVID cases in China and its impact on India, attempts by the central government to interfere in judicial appointments, the India-China conflict over the LAC Demanded to raise the issues immediately.

At the same time, in comparison to other prominent Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, it was revealed that other MPs were behind Raghav Chadha in terms of respective performance. MPs Sukhbir Badal, Sunny Deol and Simranjit Mann registered 18 per cent, 0 per cent and 45 per cent attendance, respectively, compared to Raghav Chadha’s 100 per cent attendance. Similarly, against 11 debates of AAP MP, the above three MPs participated in 0, 0 and 3 debates respectively. More importantly, none of the three MPs asked a single question during the entire winter session as compared to 25 questions asked by Raghav Chadha.
