Who is Yashwant Sinha

Yashwant Sinha is an Indian politician. Presently he is the leader of Trinamool Congress (TMC). Yashwant Sinha has also been the former Finance Minister of India. Apart from this, he has also been the foreign minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet. Yashwant Sinha joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1960 and held several positions during his 24-year tenure.

Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha was born on 6 November 1937 in a Chitraguptvanshi Kayastha family in Patna, Bihar. Yashwant Sinha attended school and university in Patna. In 1958, he has completed his Masters in Political Science from Patna University. Yashwant Sinha taught Political Science at his alma mater from 1958 to 1960.

After joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1960, Yashwant Sinha held several positions during his 24-year tenure. He served as sub-divisional magistrate and district magistrate for four years, during which he was under secretary and deputy secretary in the finance department of the Government of Bihar for two years. Thereafter he worked as Deputy Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Commerce.

Yashwant Sinha was the First Secretary (Commercial) in the Indian Embassy in Germany from 1971 to 1973. Thereafter he served as the Consul General of India in Frankfurt during 1973–1974.

Influenced by the socialist movement of Jayaprakash Narayan in the mid-seventies, Yashwant Sinha joined politics in 1974. But even after this, he remained in the civil service for 10 years due to financial incompetence and bureaucratic discretion. He resigned from the Indian Administrative Service in 1984 and joined active politics as a member of the Janata Party.

Yashwant Sinha was appointed All India General Secretary of the party in 1986 and was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1988. When the Janata Dal was formed in 1989, he was appointed its General Secretary. He served as Finance Minister in Chandrashekhar’s cabinet from November 1990 to June 1991. Yashwant Sinha became the national spokesperson of the BJP in June 1996 and was appointed the Finance Minister of India in March 1998. He represents Hazaribagh of Bihar in the Lok Sabha.
