Uttar Pradesh tops in procurement of material worth Rs 24,000 crore by government agencies through GeM portal (government e-marketplace). The portal was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2016 to ensure transparency in procurement and procurement of goods and services by government departments and its agencies.

GEM Portal is an online marketplace with three things in mind. Contactless, paperless and cashless. The portal was set up to promote start-ups, local entrepreneurs, indigenous products, entrepreneurs involved in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sector and One District One Product (OPOP) scheme.

The Press Information Bureau, under the Union Ministry of Information, organized the Gem-Vendor Dialogue here on Wednesday. In UP, 14,000 vendors are registered with the GEM portal and 4.28 lakh small entrepreneurs have made their products and services available on the portal.

The UP government has made it mandatory for government departments and its agencies to purchase a minimum of 25 percent of their requirements from the MSME sector through the GEM portal. About 79,000 MSME units are providing their services on the GEM portal, which includes small units set up by the Scheduled Caste community.

Nationally, the GEM portal had crossed the milestone of Rs 1 lakh crore procurement by government agencies in 2021-22. The total purchases from this portal are a little over Rs 3 lakh crore and more than one crore transactions.
